Trinity "Old Cemetery" Graveyard Survey

Two formal surveys of the Trinity “ Old Swedes” Church "Old Cemetery" graveyard exist. A large hand-written grid diagram was created in 1897 listing the name of everyone who had been buried and their relative location to the church building. The framed copy of this grid diagram is stored in the church today. On July 1938, Lewis D Cook created a more comprehensive inventory of who was buried in the graveyard as part of a WPA federally funded government project. His list included the row the individual was buried in and a complete record of the inscription on the gravestone, if legible. Isaac M. Philower and Russell B. Rankin, members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, checked this survey on November 8, 1938. This typed listing was printed in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. Despite the existence of these two surveys, it is difficult to locate gravestones because the rows are not marked and some stones were moved due to road construction on either side of the graveyard.

In May 2005, Mark Bitter of Boy Scout Troop 38 in Woodstown proposed to conduct a validation of the 1938 survey as part of his Eagle Scout project. He supervised a team of scouts in using the 1938 survey as a guide in:

  • Locating and marking the rows that were identified in the 1938 survey
  • Recording the inscription on each gravestone
  • Taking digital photographs of each grave to preserve the information for future generations.

The work done by the Scouts coincides with grant work being done by the New Jersey Historical Trust. It is hoped that when all information is gathered concerning the cemetery and the condition of the stones as well as the verification of the sites of historical personages, that the church can seek additional grants to protect and repair these markers.

Survey of Trinity Episcopal Church Graveyard - May 05

The "Row" column indicates which row the gravestone is located in. The rows are marked with numbered stakes in the Trinity Graveyard with Row #1 being located near the church and Row 23 the farthest away. The "Number" column indicates how many markers from the stone wall (running parallel to Kings Highway) the gravestone is. Number #1 is closest to the wall.
